Younger fans often relate to younger characters. To a lesser extent, this is part of why ships involving villains continue to be popular.Īnother thing is the age of the shipper. Shipping something doesn't necessarily mean that you think it's a "good" or "healthy" relationship.

Fiction allows people to explore certain things that they otherwise wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't. Characters like Lizzie and Grelle tended to be more hated than loved, especially before Lizzie became more developed, and non-het ships that didn't have clear "seme/uke" vibes in some form weren't particularly popular. There really weren't many other options that people enjoyed, especially for those that only watched the anime or who only read the earlier chapters of the manga. Sebaciel was the ship for the longest time, and any others were primarily outliers.
